Red cockroach, i6
The German cockroach is found in temperate countries and can be present in a wide variety of urban areas, including catering establishments, hospitals, nursing homes, households and hotels, eating discarded human food. Exposure to cockroach allergens and sensitization have been described on several continents. The main sources of cockroach allergens are cockroach saliva, feces, eggs and discarded skin, which can form dust components. Inhalation of cockroach allergens with dust is the main route of exposure and can lead to the development of bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis. Cross-reactivity is possible in individuals sensitized to the allergens of German cockroaches. Cross-reactivity can be observed with allergens of American cockroaches, proteins present in cow's milk and urine of rats and mice, ectoparasites (for example, sheep scab mites and house dust mites) and shellfish. Preventive measures focus on careful and effective cockroach eradication strategies.
