Swelling of the face and legs. Change in the color or smell of urine. Frequent or painful urination. Elevated blood pressure without any apparent cause. These symptoms are often associated with the kidneys and diseases of the urinary system.

The kidneys filter the blood, remove excess water and metabolic products, maintain electrolyte balance, and help regulate blood pressure. When they malfunction, filtration deteriorates, toxic substances accumulate in the blood, and potassium, sodium, calcium, and phosphorus levels are disrupted. This affects your well-being, heart, vessels, and metabolism.

Common kidney diseases include pyelonephritis, glomerulonephritis, and hydronephrosis. In the early stages, they may not have any obvious symptoms. Without control, these conditions can lead to chronic kidney disease and a gradual decline in organ function.

Magnesium (Mg)

  • Involved in muscle and nervous system function. In kidney disease, magnesium levels may increase or decrease due to impaired excretion.

Total calcium (Ca)

  • Associated with bone strength and heart function. The kidneys are involved in its metabolism, so calcium levels may change in kidney disease.

K (potassium)

  • Critically important for heart rhythm. The kidneys remove excess potassium, and hazardous abnormalities are possible if their function is impaired.

Na (sodium)

  • Responsible for water-salt balance and blood pressure. Kidney disease disrupts sodium excretion, leading to edema and hypertension.

Inorganic phosphorus

  • Regulated by the kidneys. Elevated levels may indicate a decrease in kidney filtration function.

Creatinine

  • The main indicator of kidney function. The higher the level, the worse the kidneys filter blood.

Urea

  • A product of protein metabolism. Increases with decreased kidney function and accumulation of metabolic products in the blood.

Complete urine test

  • Indicates inflammation, the presence of protein, red blood cells, and salts. Important for detecting pyelonephritis, glomerulonephritis, and other kidney diseases.

Albumin/creatinine ratio in a single urine sample

  • Allows early detection of protein loss in urine, even if the general urine test does not yet show any significant changes.
