Cholesterol is a fat-like substance found in cell membranes that plays an important role in metabolic processes.
The body produces about 75% of cholesterol (mainly in the liver and small intestine), and about 25% comes from food.
Functions of cholesterol:
- Building cell membranes (maintaining stability and elasticity).
- Synthesizing sex hormones (estrogens, testosterone), as well as adrenal cortex hormones.
- Synthesizing vitamin D (in the skin when exposed to sunlight).
- Formation of bile acids in the liver, necessary for the digestion of fats.
Cholesterol itself is a neutral substance. "Good" or "bad" cholesterol are not different substances, but different forms of transport, fractions in which it circulates.
Types of cholesterol
Total cholesterol (Total cholesterol)
- This is the total amount of cholesterol in the blood: both "good" and "bad".
Cholesterol - LDL (low-density lipoproteins), "bad" cholesterol
- This is the fraction that transports cholesterol to tissues. If there is too much of it, LDL can settle on the walls of vessels, forming atherosclerotic plaques, narrowing the lumen of vessels and increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

- This fraction plays a protective role: it collects excess cholesterol from tissues and returns it to the liver for processing and excretion.
