Birch + allergenic components
Reflex testing for birch allergen (exclusively at OLYMP CDL)
If you or your child experience sneezing, runny or blocked nose, watery eyes, cough, sore throat, or even skin symptoms after walking outdoors - it might be an allergy to birch pollen.
To confirm this, laboratory testing is important.
What does the test show?
The test detects sensitization to birch pollen in general and to its specific molecular components:
- rBet v 1 (PR-10) - a major marker of true birch allergy. It can cause severe symptoms, including allergic rhinitis and asthma.
- rBet v 2 (profilin) - a marker of cross-reactivity. Sensitization to profilin may indicate possible reactions to other plant pollens, fruits, or vegetables.
- rBet v 4 - a less common component, also associated with cross-reactions.
How is the test done?
- A single venous blood sample is taken.
- Total IgE to birch pollen is measured first.
- If sensitization is present, additional testing is done for rBet v 1, v 2, and v 4.
- If there’s no general sensitization, molecular testing is not performed.
Why ImmunoCAP?
- The test is done using ImmunoCAP - the gold standard in allergy diagnostics:
- Precise quantitative measurement of IgE antibodies
- Safe: no direct allergen exposure, suitable for children, pregnant women, elderly
- No need to stop antihistamine medications
