Gray alder (Alnus incana) belongs to the Betulaceae family, which also consists of species of birch, hazel, oak and hornbeam trees. It is a deciduous tree that can grow up to 24 meters. The flowering season is from February to May, pollen size is 15-40 microns. It usually prefers high humidity, so it can be seen near the banks of rivers and swamps. This species originated from Central Europe and has spread to Russia, Siberia, Asia, the United States, and other parts of the world.
Alder is one of the main factors of pollinosis and an inducer of respiratory allergies such as rhinitis, rhinoconjunctivitis, and bronchial asthma. The main route of exposure to this pollen is inhalation. To date, allergens of alder pollen have not been characterized. But the main allergen of common alder (Alnus glutinosa) Alt g 1 was recognized. It exhibits extensive cross-reactivity with the main allergens of the pollen of trees of the Betulaceae family.
