Cultivated oat pollen can cause asthma, allergic rhinitis, and allergic conjunctivitis in sensitized people, however, few studies have been published to date. 
Nine allergens representing a number of allergen groups have been characterized in oatmeal (Avena sativa), and extensive cross-reactivity among other members of the Poaceae family, especially in the Pooideae subfamily, can be expected to a certain extent.
