Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a hormone of the parathyroid gland. PTH level directly
It is related to the level of calcium – the less calcium, the more PTH is produced and vice versa.
Such dependence is due to the main function of the hormone to regulate calcium concentration.
If the level of this vital micronutrient decreases, paratgormone activates special bone structure cells - osteoclasts, which destroy bone tissue, due to which "released" calcium enters the blood. It is also getting stronger absorption of calcium in the intestine, and decreased excretion through the kidneys.
Decreased calcium concentration and increased paratgormone is an important link in the development of osteoporosis. This disease is characterized by a decrease in bone density and as a result, their deformation and increased tendency to fractures.
