Wormwood, w5
The Artemisia family includes wormwood (A. absinthum), common wormwood (A scoparia), estragon synasdragol, tarragon (A. dracunculus) and extremely important wormwood aeroallergen (A. vulgaris). Evidence suggests that asthma, allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis often occur after exposure of wormwood pollen. Art v 1, defensin, a wormwood pollen allergen, has been shown to cross-react with the pollen allergen of botanically related complex flowering weeds (Artemisia absinthium, Helianthus annuus and Ambrosia sp.).
Allogenetic allergens were recognized by IgE in patients sensitized to wormwood. Specific IgE detection in human blood to – wormwood, w5, demonstrates the body response to this allergen.
