Cottonwood is a deciduous, fast-growing tree that can reach heights from 175 to 190 feet. It is claimed that the average life expectancy of this tree ranges from 55 to 65 years. The tree originates from North America and is distributed in countries such as the USA, Canada, Sweden, Great Britain, the Netherlands, India, China, Nepal, Australia, Pakistan, and New Zealand.
This tree can emit pollen in abundance, which may be the cause of allergic reactions. Exposure to poplar pollen can cause allergic rhinitis and asthma in people with allergies. To date, no poplar allergen has been identified in the IUIS database. Cross-reactivity has been reported between tree species of the order Salicaceae and Fagales. It is also reported that species from the genus Populus (cotton) and Salix (willow) exhibit strong cross-reactivity.
