Stool examination (coprogram) general clinical manual method

Coprogram is a complex laboratory feces test, which allows you to assess the work of the digestive system, to identify inflammatory processes, signs of enzymatic disorders and the presence of pathological impurities. This analysis is carried out manually, which ensures high accuracy and reliability of the results due to detailed microscopic analysis of the sample by a specialist.

What does the coprogram detect?

  • Physical properties of feces, which are its color, consistency, odor, the presence of mucus.
  • Chemical composition, which is pH, hidden blood, bilirubin, stercobilin, ammonia.
  • Microscopic structure, which is  the presence of fiber, muscle fibers, starch, fat, leukocytes, red blood cells, crystals and bacteria.

The coprogram is performed when there is a suspicion of:

  • Digestive disorders (flatulence, diarrhea, constipation).
  • Diseases of the stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas.
  • Inflammatory processes in the GI tract (gastritis, colitis, enteritis).
  • Suspicion of internal bleeding.
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of treatment of GI diseases.

Methods of research

In the manual method of the coprogram, the following is performed:

  • Macroscopic evaluation (appearance, consistency, impurities).
  • Chemical analysis (hidden blood, bilirubin, fatty acids).
  • Microscopy (muscle fibers, connective tissue, starch, fat, parasites, bacteria).

How to prepare for the test?

  • For 2-3 days exclude the intake of antibiotics, laxatives, activated charcoal.
  • Do not eat foods that color feces (beets, blueberries).
  • Exclude alcohol and fatty foods.
  • Collect material in a sterile container, avoiding urine.
  • Deliver the sample to the laboratory within 1-2 hours.

Advantages of the manual method:

  • High accuracy due to the work of an experienced specialist.
  • The possibility of detecting even minimal pathological changes.
  • Fast and reliable diagnosis for timely treatment.
