Fescue (genus Festuca) is a large genus of cereals belonging to the Poaceae family. Festuca pratensis (F. pratensis, meadow fescue), native to Eurasia, is a perennial herb commonly found in temperate and cold regions from Alaska to Nova Scotia, Europe and the USA. Meadow fescue is used as fodder, turf and stabilizing soil.
The primary allergen of meadow fescue is pollen grain, monoporous, spherical to ovoid, with a diameter of 31-40 mm. It is reported to cause allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis and asthma in sensitized people with oral or nasal exposure, which has been proven by various analysis. Meadow fescue grass consists of the following allergen molecules Fes p 1, Fes p 4, Fes p 5 and Fes p 13. Meadow grasses have extensive cross-reactivity among the Poaceae family, especially within the Pooidea subfamily.
