Asthma, allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis can occur as a result of contact with chicken feathers, epithelial cells or droppings. Allergic manifestations can manifest as bird lover's asthma and bird egg syndrome with symptoms such as rhinitis, hives and angioedema; as well as gastrointestinal problems. Specific IgE has been detected in patients who have come into contact with chicken feathers, and it has been reported that contact with chicken is a common cause of occupational asthma and allergic rhinitis.
Clinical allergies to commercial feather products are less common than is commonly believed as a result of dust removal, washing and drying at 125°C.
Allergenic proteins can be found in the serum, droppings and feathers of birds. Contact may occur as a result of handling birds, cleaning their cages, or exposure to organic dust carried from places where birds live.
